RE: We don't have an RV, the wife was right

Too funny - after a rough day at the office, this was just what I needed to regain my perspective. Mine is a motorhome, an RV, a camper and my sanity.

RE: Best way to clean black tank

I have a wand and used it once. Don't have an opinion one way or the other. I have had very good luck just filling the tank with water after we drain the tanks. Wait a little while and then drain again. Reads empty every time just by doing the second drain.

RE: Best Memory?

This is our first year so mine is easy. :)
My boyfriend has done so much to make my life wonderful and I really wanted to do something special for his 50th birthday. We went to Normandy Farms in Massachusetts for a week. We celebrated his birthday with a sign on the back window on the way up, decorated the campsite on his birthday, and even found a way to have a cake and balloons delivered to our site. We also did a whale watching tour which was truly fabulous. But my favorite moment? There was a moment when we were sitting at the campsite just enjoying our surroundings when he looked so relaxed and happy. I picked up the camera and took a snapshot of one of the happiest smiles I've ever seen. I look at that picture often on my digital frame and on my desk at work - and it always brings that feeling back of the sheer pleasure of doing something special for someone I love.
We're planning to do lots of wonderful things with the motorhome but I can't imagine anything better than that.
Thanks for starting this thread. I'm looking forward to more responses.

RE: Why are people against RVing?

I would have allowed the conversation to end very quickly. Disagreements like these with co-workers aren't productive and can create drama in the workplace. Chalk it up as yet another person who thinks their way is the only way...and avoid the topic in their presence.
But it's okay to feel sorry for someone like that. They're robbing themselves of some pretty fabulous stuff.

RE: Why are people against RVing?

People don't like to see people use other people. RV's think once they get into the RV, everything in life should be free. Parking is the main problem. Here there and everywhere. If Rver's parked in RV parks and didn't try to fit into a car spot in the wrong place there wouldn't be much trouble. Just cheap RVer's I guess.
You're joking right?
We bought a SELF CONTAINED RV (bet you's is too) just so we didn't have to hook up every night. If you choose to go to a cattleground to stay overnight that's your CHOICE and not one you can make for others! Don't like it, don't do it!!
Our retirement (should we ever get to do that now that my daughter died and left us two boys to raise) income will be about $6,000/mo so we don't need to dry camp to make ends meet but we will anyway, no matter what some people think about it.
Deen, I'm so sorry for your loss and wish you every success.

RE: Bad Walmart Campers II

Wow. We have homelessness, hunger, disease, crime, our political direction, the economy, foreign affairs, war - all being covered by the national news media.
How in the heck did they miss this burning issue? Somebody call Bill O'Reilly...I'm sure he would know what to do.
Personally, I'm getting tired of the whole "they're gonna ruin it for others" garbage. It's old, it's weak, and it's utterly ridiculous.

RE: Places to see /eat in Boston

While not historical, I would recommend a whale watch tour from the harbor. We used Harbor Cruises and they take you out to the feeding grounds. It was truly awesome. We'll never forget it. I was surprised at how inexpensive it was and they even offer a guarantee. If you don't see a whale you can do another tour for free. I have some of the most amazing pictures and video of the 15-20 whales we encountered.

I would leave when I want to and leave it up to the "gods of camping" to determine who gets it.

RE: Question for RV'ers

The answer to your query is very simple.
Your a camper. You set the pop-up up and do so to enjoy the great outdoors for the weekend or week or two of vacation.
We have a MH and live in it. We aren't campers in the above sense of the word. We travel from place to place to enjoy the wonderful USA but we don't have to crowd a years worth of site seeing and camping into that week or two a year. We have a much more laid back and reasonable approach to it. BTW: If you have the space available, I can send you over 19,000 digital photos of things/places we have visited in the last 5 years to prove that we do come out of the RV from time to time. :) :) :)
Hey, Hershey, do you have any of Yellowstone or the Grand Canyon? I'm researching both for next year and the year after and I can't seem to find enough good quality pics to satisfy my craving.
OP, perhaps I can shed some additional light. There are times when I go for a quick weekend just to get away from the housework and to read a good book. For some reason, I can relax in the motorhome so much easier than I can at home. If my fibromyalgia pain is bad, I can still have an enjoyable weekend while my daughter enjoys her surroundings too. I love watching her have fun. It's all good soul food - even if you don't see me.

RE: We've Been Robbed!

I, too, am so sorry you're experiencing this. It's a terrible thing and I hope there will be an "up side" somehow, somewhere along the way.
I also, of course, hope the bad guys get what they deserve.
Best wishes to you and your family.

RE: great campground bad campsite

I don't understand the whole soda machine thing. One customer tells the manager they don't have enough soda machines so they put one it in at the bath house where lots of people walk past. Then another customer says they don't want the site next to the bath house because of the ambient light from the soda machine. I think I'm beginning to understand some of the frustration of the campground staff. Just an ironic observation...I don't mean to offend.
I also don't understand the generalized hostility to KOA's. It's like saying all green bugs are poisonous or all brown drinks are delicious. I've been to great campgrounds and I'm been to average campgrounds - and I've even been to one or two I don't intend to go back to. But I can't find any relationship between my opinion of them and their affiliation with KOA.

RE: great campground bad campsite

We were just there for four days and stayed in a pull-through site on the end just a few feet from the office (#60). My mom was with us for this trip and noticed there was some poison ivy between the the sites. We found the staff to be friendly and knowledgeable and I'm certain they would be helpful in resolving your problem. There were empty sites there when we left and with school about to open, I can't imagine they're full now.
I agree with a previous poster. Ask them to help you with the poison ivy issue. Perhaps they would get a maintenance person to come and clear it out so you don't have to move. I wouldn't bother with the bath house and soda machine.

RE: How Many nights or weekends............

We did 10 days in June and I only missed 3 weekends from May through last weekend. The weekends were probably an even split between 2 nights, 3 nights, and 4 nights.
I haven't worked a full week since June 1st - and I'm very proud of it since I'm a workaholic by nature. Exhausted...but proud. That pace is a bit much for a single mom with a muscle disorder.
Next year, we're doing two weeks at Yellowstone and likely fewer weekends.

RE: Bad WalMart Campers

OH NOOOOOOO!
These two RVers may have actually spoiled it for the rest of us. Now none of us will be able to overnight there or at any other place of business ever again.
Is that a good over-reaction or were you hoping for something a little more dramatic?

RE: For a Change...

My thanks go out to the folks who instantly recognize I'm traveling alone with my daughter and offer to help me back in...
and to the gentleman who insisted on helping me to level my motorhome perfectly on a day I just didn't care that much...
and to the gentlemen who noticed we didn't have newspaper to start our campfire and brought plenty over...
and to the lovely family who allowed their daughter to sleep over in our site when our kids became instant best friends...
and to all of you for the wealth of information and experiences and your willingness to share it. Our first year of RVing has been absolutely wonderful and it's because of you.

RE: Which one are you?

No category for me. I'll go for a weekend, long weekend, week, two weeks, at every opportunity. Fortunately for me, I get 28 days of vacation per year - and I'm having fun using them.
Unfortunately for me, the reason I get 28 days of vacation is because I'm still working, darn it.

RE: Is proper CG etiquatte fading away?

I don't mind it when someone walks through my site. And I like watching kids have a good time. My only issue would be safety - and I wouldn't hesitate to address a safety issue with the children or the adults if my site was involved.
Dog poop is dog poop. I don't consider it important enough to ruin my day. I'm on a trip to have fun - not to notice the idiocy of the human race. Heck, I can do that at work or the local grocery store.
There have been idiots in the human race for as long as humans have existed. Isn't it funny how complaining about them or getting upset about them never does any good. They couldn't care less if the rest of us like their behavior or not. Why waste time, energy or emotion on something that isn't going to change - particularly if all we're talking about is somebody walking through a campsite.
If you have an issue with a fellow camper that needs to be addressed, I say go for it. But I still don't understand why people get seriously upset over other people merely walking through their site. It just seems a bit "uptight" to me. I go camping to get away from my "uptight" self.

RE: Is proper CG etiquatte fading away?

There seems to be an issue with people using walkways, sidewalks, and paths. What is their purpose then? The greenery is to be enjoyed by all not destroyed by careless people who don't think about the person who come next.
These are the same people that go off of the hiking trails, write on rocks and carve their names in trees. Afterall, it's just one. They don't get the idea that if one does so does another and then there is little left for one to enjoy. I seldom stay in a campground or rv park, but when I do I don't have a problem telling someone not to cut through my site.
Even at home, my pets have enough common sense to stay on the stepping stones, sidewalk and driveway.
I confess I have sometimes walked through grass when the pathway was blocked by people or animals - but I swear I have never written on a rock or carved my name or anything else on a tree (or a bathroom wall for that matter).
Don't get mad - I'm just havin' a little fun.
Ok - I get it - there are some really careless, ignorant, or even obnoxious people out there. But for the most part this issue is a minor inconvenience or annoyance, isn't it? Is it really worth getting upset over?
That handful of truly obnoxious people are the exception rather than the rule and they should and can be dealt with appropriately. I still don't understand all the fuss over someone walking harmlessly through a campsite. They shouldn't do it - and if they thought about it, they probably wouldn't do it. If you feel the need to offer them guidance, I think that's great. But bringing the bad feeling about it home seems like overkill to me.
Life is short and when we take our last breaths I doubt any of us will remember the people that walked through our sites. Heck, there are so many other "trespasses against us" that I'm sure will come to mind.
